Guwahati: Following the harvest season, illegal soil excavation has reportedly surged across farmland in Assam’s Kaliabor during the month of Aghon, triggering concern among local farmers and residents.
According to local sources, unauthorized operators are openly extracting soil from agricultural fields, often disregarding established rules and regulations. Villagers say the activities are being carried out boldly, with minimal administrative oversight, creating widespread anxiety across the rural belt.
Heavy machinery has been frequently seen digging into fertile farmland, posing a serious threat to long-term soil health and agricultural productivity. Farmers warn that if the practice continues unchecked, it could permanently degrade soil quality, making previously cultivable land unsuitable for future crops.
Officials confirm that much of the excavation lacks mandatory departmental clearances. Consequently, large areas of farmland are being damaged, and the state is reportedly losing significant revenue due to unpaid royalties and levies, with losses estimated in several lakhs of rupees.
Residents are now appealing to the district administration to take swift action against the culprits. They emphasize the need for stricter monitoring and enforcement measures to prevent further destruction of agricultural land and safeguard the livelihoods of local farmers.
