Just Be Friendly (JBF) – the NGO in Assam working for protection of animals, particularly stray dogs have embarked upon an ambitious vaccination programme for the stray dogs roaming around the Kaziranga National Park.

A blood sample collection drive of these stary dogs roaming in the vicinity of the Kaziranga National Park has begun from Thursday.

A team of veterinarians from the national park, members of the NGO, and representatives from the Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) of Barapani in Meghalaya have been catching these stray dogs by nets since Thursday morning and collecting blood samples.

The team is being led by veterinarians from Kaziranga, Dr Debabrata Phukan and Dr Biswajit Barua.

The collected blood samples will be sent to Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR) of Barapani in Meghalaya for the required tests.

After that vaccination process will begin on these stray dogs roaming around the vicinity of the Kaziranga National Park to protect them from various diseases.

Dr Phukan further said that maximum stress has been given to rabies and canine distemper – two most dreaded diseases that inflict these stray dogs.

Dr Phukan also said that the vaccination programme has been undertaken to prevent these fatal diseases being transmitted to people residing in the region and also wild animals of the national park.

The researchers have lately expressed concern that wild animals inside the park face grave danger from canine distemper transmitted from stray dogs that venture into the wilds of the park.
