After questioning and completing the legal formalities, the foreign national, identified as Mustakin Islam, was pushed back to his country

Guwahati: Assam Police have foiled yet another infiltration attempt along the India-Bangladesh border in Karimganj district of Assam.

Alert personnel of the state police on Tuesday night apprehended a Bangladeshi national after he managed to sneak into India crossing the border fence in Karimganj.

After questioning and completing the legal formalities, the foreign national, identified as Mustakin Islam, was pushed back to his country.

Assam shares a 276.5-km-long international border with Bangladesh.

While Barak Valley’s Cachar and Karimganj districts share an international border with Bangladesh, Dhubri and South Salmara-Mankachar districts in lower Assam share borders with the neighbouring country.

Earlier this month, the Assam Police apprehended 12 Bangladeshi nationals from the Hatsingimari area of South Salmara-Mankachar district.

They were nabbed while trying to return to Bangladesh after a brief stay in different parts of India.

The Border Security Force (BSF) and state police later deported them to Bangladesh.

Influx of Bangladeshi nationals into the Northeastern states, including Assam, has been on the rise ever since the neighbouring country has witnessed political unrest.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma last month said more than 108 illegal Bangladeshi nationals have been arrested in Assam so far.
