The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and 28 other organizations representing various ethnic groups on Friday called on the State Director General of Police (DGP) regarding the ongoing investigation into the mob lynching incident of two Guwahati youths – Nilotpal Das and Abhijeet Nath – at Panjuri village under Dokmoka Police Station in Karbi Anglong on June 8.

The organisations demanded the DGP to ensure proper investigation into the case, tight vigil on the social media platform and fast track the investigation.

The leaders also demanded that the students of a particular community, who are studying in different parts of Assam, be protected.

Demanding exemplary punishment to the culprits involved in the mob lynching, AASU chief advisor Dr Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya said, “We urged the DGP to take strict action against the arrested culprits who were involved in the Dokmoka incident. We also demanded the DGP to ensure proper investigation into the matter so that no accused can go free by taking advantage of the loopholes in the law.”

“The DGP promised us that the Assam Police would take all the necessary actions to provide justice to the victims,” added Bhattacharya.

The AASU chief advisor further said, “In this incident, the Assamese murdered their Assamese brothers only. Crime is crime and criminal is criminal. There is no excuse. The culprits must be punished. It is unnecessary and would be foolish to see the incident from the angle of religion or community or language.”

Bhattacharya urged the Assam Government to take necessary steps for the Karbi students who went back to Karbi Anglong in fear of unwanted situation after the lynching incident and could not take admission in colleges in different parts of the State.

Talking to media after the meeting with the organisations, DGP Kuladhar Saikia said, “There was a discussion with the representatives of all 29 organisations including AASU on the incident that recently took place in Karbi Anglong. We have taken the matter seriously.”

The DGP Saikia refused to make any statement on the confession made by the main culprit of the mob lynching incident and said, “We do not want to make any statement on the matter for security reasons which may affect the whole investigation process.”

“To curb superstitions like witch-hunting, the administration will work in association with all the 29 organisations,” added the DGP while talking on the circulation of rumours and hate messages on and off the social media platform.

Meanwhile, talking about the anti-talk faction of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA-I) statement in social networking site Facebook where the militant outfit on June 12, 2018 stated about inclusion of 200 new cadres to the outfit organisation, the DGP said, “We are aware of it. Our social media monitoring cell has been continuously looking into the matter. We have already started legal procedure against the banned outfit for their involvement in uploading such posts about recruitment on Facebook page.”

It may be mentioned that ULFA-I on June 12, 2018 at 11:22 am on a Facebook page post stated: “Click here link… We are updating our new membership photography above 200… New faces.”

Meanwhile the All Assam Karbi Students’ Union (AAKSU) president Samson Teron said, “For the greater interest of the people of Karbi Anglong and the students, who are studying outside the district, I appealed to the DGP that no innocent people should be harassed during the investigation in Karbi Anglong.”

Special branch Director General Pallab Bhattacharya and Additional Director General of Police Harmeet Singh were also present in the conference.
