National People’s Party (NPP) MP from Tura and former Union minister Agatha Sangma demanded the repeal of the Citizens’ Amendment Act (CAA) 2019 during the NDA floor leaders’ meet ahead of the winter session of the Parliament.
The winter session of the Parliament is scheduled to be held from November 29-December 23, 2021.
According to a media report, in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) floor leaders meeting held on Sunday at Parliament, alliance partner NPP demanded the Centre to repeal the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019.
NPP MP from Meghalaya’s Tura constituency, Agatha Sangma told reporters that in the floor leaders’ meeting of the NDA alliance parties, “I demanded the Centre to repeal the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, keeping in mind the sentiments of the people.”

The CAA, passed by Parliament in December 2019 and notified by the Narendra Modi government in January 2020, was widely opposed in the Northeast due to the fear of large-scale influx from Bangladesh.
A total of 5 young people died during police firing on December 12, 2019 in Assam while protesting against the CAA.
On Sunday, the BJP parliamentary executive meeting also took place in the Parliament.

It has been reported that the BJP-led NDA government has a heavy agenda for the winter session of the Parliament beginning on Monday with its legislative business including 26 new bills.
The NDA government has indicated that the bill to repeal the 3 farm laws will be taken up on priority.
The agenda also includes the Cryptocurrency and Regulation of Official Digital Currency Bill, 2021.
