Assam Abdul Muhib Majumdar

Former Assam minister, eminent advocate and IMDT Act architect Abdul Muhib Majumdar passed away on Wednesday morning.

He died at around 8:15 am on Wednesday at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

The former minister had been undergoing treatment in the hospital for about a month.

He was 89 years old at the time of his demise.

Majumdar was resident of Hatigaon in Guwahati.

Abdul Muhib Majumdar entered into politics in the 1970s and represented the Hailakandi constituency for four times as an MLA in 1983-1991, 1996-2001 and 2011-2016.

Till 1985, Majumdar served as a Cabinet minister of Assam in the Congress ministry headed by Hiteswar Saikia.

In the 1990s, he formed a new party, named UPPA (United People’s Party of Assam).

During the Prafulla Kumar Mahanta-led coalition government, Majumdar was inducted as a Cabinet minister in 1996.

He later disbanded the UPPA and became the president of the Assam unit of the Samajwadi Party.

Later he returned to Congress.

In 1986-91, Majumdar was the deputy leader of the Opposition.

He was a member of the State Security Commission, a member of the All India Congress Committee, vice-president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee and also served as the chairman and adviser of minority cell of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee.

Among his most important works were the IMDT Act 1983 and preparation of the draft of Assam Accord 1985.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has deeply condoled the demise of Majumdar.

“Saddened at the demise of former minister and lawyer Abdul Muhib Majumdar. His contributions during his long association with society and politics of Assam will be remembered forever. Extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and wish for eternal peace of his soul,” chief minister Sarma tweeted.

Many other leaders have also condoled the demise of Majumdar.

“Deeply saddened to hear the demise of our Veteran Congress Leader, Former Minister & a Renowned Senior Advocate at Guwahati HC, Shri Abdul Muhib Majumdar. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Rajya Sabha MP and former Assam Congress president Ripun Bora tweeted.

“Paid last respect to #AbdulMuhibMajumdar, former Minister, Former Advocate General of Assam And Arunachal Pradesh, designed senior Advocate of Gauhati High Court in Guwahati Rajiv Bhawan,” tweeted Congress MP from Barpeta, Abdul Khaleque.

Trinamool Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev tweeted: “Sorry to hear about the passing away of Abdul Muhib Majumdar renowned lawyer & Former Minister of Assam. My deepest condolences.”
