The caretaker accused of the killing of an elderly couple in Guwahati has confessed to his involvement in the crime, police said on Friday.

Caretaker Akash Choudhury finally confessed to killing the elderly couple at Chandan Nagar in the city’s Beltola area, said a police official.

Akash, who had denied his involvement in the crime till Thursday evening, confessed to killing the couple on Friday three days after marathon police interrogation.

Akash was arrested on Tuesday evening on charges of house trespassing, theft and murder.

A local court in Guwahati on Wednesday sent him to seven-day police custody after investigators submitted evidence that “clearly established his involvement” in the crime.

Akash’s wife Putu Das is currently being interrogated at Panbazar police station.

Elderly couple Nanigopal Baruah (87) and Meena Baruah (65) were found dead at their residence in the Beltola area of the city on Tuesday morning.

Nani Barua, a retired engineer and Meena Barua, a retired teacher, lived alone in their house.

They were found lying on a bed in their bedroom. Police said they have found injuries on their heads from sharp weapons.

The incident took place on Monday night but came to light on Tuesday morning after the couple’s caretaker Akash Choudhury informed the police claiming that he saw the bodies lying on bed around 7 am.

After the initial investigation, Guwahati Police picked up Akash, who was living in an outhouse in the couple’s compound along with his family.
