Trouble seems to be mounting for Meghalaya NPP MLA Thomas Sangma.
After an FIR being lodged against MLA Thomas Sangma, accusing him of rape, Congress MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh has now demanded the North Tura MLA’s removal from Assembly Committee on estimates.
Ampareen Lyngdoh has made this demand in a letter to to Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh on Wednesday.
She cited the example of removal of former MLA of Mawhati – Julius Dorphang as member of Assembly committees in 2017, by then Speaker AT Mondal, after an FIR for sexual assault was registered against him.

Congress MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh, who is also the chairperson for empowerment of women of Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, in her letter to the Speaker termed the incident ‘unfortunate’.
Ampareen said that accusation of this nature, which has been raised against a member of the Assembly “shocks the conscience of our society and puts a huge expectation on representatives of the people to ensure that the principles of accountability are held in utmost regard”.
An FIR has been filed against Thomas Sangma, National People’s Party (NPP) MLA from North Tura constituency in Meghalaya, accusing him of rape.
The victim alleged that Thomas Sangma raped her on several occasions by making false promises of marrying her.

The victim alleged that Thomas Sangma used to raped her either at her residence or at a hotel in Shillong.
The victim in her FIR alleged that NPP MLA Thomas Sangma had been raping her on the pretext of marrying her from January 2020 till April 17 this year.
