An unidentified old man was found abandoned in Assam’s Jorhat on Saturday.

The abandoned man was found at Dhenususa near Barpool on the eastern outskirts of Jorhat town.

The man, who is most likely a deaf-mute, was wearing a loin cloth and vest and was found sitting by the side of the road by the people of the area.

The locals informed the Jorhat police, who took him away at around 5 pm and admitted to a hospital.

A bystander said the man did not answer to any of the questions asked making them suspect that he was a deaf-mute.

“He could not tell us from where he had come or how he had come to be there. He however, ate the biscuits and tea given to him,” the man said.

A policeman said investigation was on to ascertain from where the man hails and whether he had been abandoned there or had wandered to the place.

Assam government in 2018 enacted a legislation called the Assam Employees Parental Responsibility Norms for Accountability Monitoring Act, 2017.

The rules of the law, called Pranam Act in short were approved by the Assam Cabinet in 2018.

The aggrieved parents have to approach the designated authority to claim the money for their upkeep along with proof of no source of income and need of financial support.
