A 40-year-old farmer, who was participating in the protest at Delhiโ€™s Singhu border against the three central farm laws, allegedly committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance on Saturday.

The farmer, identified as Amarinder Singh, was a resident of Punjabโ€™s Fatehgarh Sahib district.

Police said the man was rushed to Frank Institute of Medical Science (FIMS) in Sonipat in a critical condition where he died during treatment.

Farmers from various parts of the country, mostly from Punjab and Haryana, have been camping at different border points of Delhi for over a month now demanding repeal of the three farm laws.

This is the fourth suicide among protesters at the Capitalโ€™s borders. The first was of 65-year-old Sant Baba Ram Singh, a religious leader from Haryanaโ€™s Karnal district.

He had shot himself near Kundli stating that he was pained by the plight of farmers. The second was of Amarjit Singh Rai, a 63-year-old lawyer from Punjabโ€™s Fazilka district, who died after consuming pesticide at the Tikri protest site.

On January 3, a 70-year-old farmer from Uttar Pradeshโ€™s Rampur district had killed himself at the Ghazipur protest site near the Delhi-UP border.

In a purported suicide note, he wrote that he was taking the step โ€œto oppose the farm billsโ€.
