Digboi: In a major operation against an alleged cross-border narcotics and illegal arms network, Assam Police arrested a youth from Arunachal Pradesh at Jagun and recovered a pistol, 15 rounds of live ammunition and several packets of suspected drugs along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.
The joint operation, carried out by personnel of Lekhapani and Jagun police, led to the arrest of Natung Kamcha, a resident of Nampong in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district. Police alleged that he was attempting to transport the contraband into Assam when he was intercepted.
During the operation, police seized an Italy-made pistol, 15 live rounds of ammunition, four soap cases containing suspected narcotics, and two mobile phones from the accused.
The recovery of both a firearm and suspected narcotics has raised concerns among investigators about possible links between drug trafficking and illegal arms smuggling in the strategically important border region.
According to police sources, Kamcha is suspected of having been involved in transporting narcotics from Arunachal Pradesh into Assam on multiple occasions. Investigators are now examining whether he was acting independently or as part of a larger cross-border trafficking network.
Police sources further claimed that Kamcha was previously associated with the banned NSCN (IM). Investigators are verifying the claim while probing the origin of the seized firearm, the suspected narcotics supply chain and any possible links to organised criminal or insurgent networks.
Further investigation into the case is underway.
