Varangalai, a small hamlet in Manipur’s Ukhrul district has got a government primary school for the first time.
In absence of a school, children from the hamlet have been attending schools in Ukhrul town, which is situated about 32 kilometers away.

The government school building was inaugurated on December 29 by Chingai MLA Khashim Vashum.
The six-room building of the primary school has been constructed by local councilor Paothing Vashum with the State Fund-2019-20 of the district council.

The hamlet with only 36 houses, is within the jurisdiction of the Phungcham village in the district.
Though the hamlet was established in 1972, it has seen little or no development even after so many years.
The hamlet is in urgent need of many basic facilities, including a supply of clean drinking water round the clock.
“We have been sending our children to Ukhrul town for the past 40 years in absence of a school in Varangalai ,” a report quoted Ningkhan Pheirei, local chairman of Varangalai.
“We have been facing a lot of economic hardship because of this,” he said
