After the road accident at Lepetkata on Thursday morning that claimed 6 lives, the Dibrugarh Police and Transport department have geared up to take steps for curbing such incidents.

A meeting, headed by the Dibrugarh superintendent of police, Prateek Vijay Thube, was convened at the administrative building of BCPL to discuss measures to curb road accidents.

The meeting was also attended by additional deputy commissioner (ADC) Ranjit Konwar, district transport officer (DTO) Sanjiv Hazarika, inspector of Dibrugarh Traffic branch, Dipjyoti Dadhora, representatives of PWD, NHIDCL and BCPL.

The following decisions were taken after discussion with the road construction agencies, Transport department and traffic branch to curb road accidents in Dibrugarh.

A joint inspection of the National Highway-37 and the Dibrugarh bypass will be carried out by the representatives of district administration, police, Traffic branch, road transport, road construction agencies.

They will prepare a report regarding the problems faced by the drivers due to lack of proper signage, lights, traffic signals and speed limit signage.

The report will be prepared before December 7.

It will be checked whether the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) of the Indian Road Congress have been followed or not while construction of the roads and accordingly, suggestions will be given for short and long-term measures.

Fines will be imposed on the heavy vehicles parked outside Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL) other than designated parking areas.

It was decided to instruct BCPL that the vehicles coming to BCPL would be parked inside its campus.

BCPL will also provide the list of vehicles to the traffic police on daily basis to enable the Transport and Traffic branch to take action against the rest of the vehicles parked illegally near BCPL.

It has been instructed to National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) to put adequate signage on the newly-constructed Dibrugarh bypass to encourage people for its proper usage.

It has been also instructed for proper signage on the road from Sukafa Tiniali towards Bogibeel.

Simultaneously, instructions have been given for putting up proper signage on the rural roads connected with the highway with speed-limit and other traffic guides for a safe traffic system.
