Mizoram’s Covid-19 death toll reached five on Monday as a 79-year-old man succumbed to the virus at Zoram Medical College (ZMC), about 16 km from Aizawl, an official said.

Rengchhuana, a resident of Seling village in Saitual district, who was undergoing treatment at ZMC, died of Covid-19 on Monday afternoon, state nodal officer of Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) Pachuau Lalmalsawma said.

He tested Covid-19 positive on October 29.

Pachuau, who is also a state health department spokesperson on Covid-19, said that the victim had also suffered from hypertension and diabetes.

His body was sent to his native village in the evening for disposal.

This is the second Covid-19 death within 39 hours.

On Saturday night, K. Lalnuntluanga, a resident of Aizawl’s Durtlang died of the disease at ZMC.

Mizoram reported its first Covid-19 death on October 28.

The virus has so far claimed at least five lives, four of them belonged to Aizawl district.

Meanwhile, state health minister Dr. R. Lalthangliana expressed regret over the demise of Rengchhuana and condoled the bereaved families.

The minister also urged the people to strictly follow safety protocol and other Covid-19 protocol during the state-wide Covid-19 No Tolerance Drive, which is scheduled to be lifted on November 30.

The Northeastern state on Monday reported three new Covid-19 cases, taking the state’s tally to 3,396.

Two cases were reported from Saitual district and one reported from Mamit district, according to an official.

The three patients, including Indian Army personnel (Assam Regiment) have returned from other states.

The patients are out of danger as they have no symptoms of Covid-19, the official said.

Five people were discharged from hospitals after they were declared recovered on Monday.

The number of active cases stands at 510 while 2,881 people have already recovered from the virus.

The recovery rate is 84.84 per cent.

Only Saiha district in the southern part of the state is Covid-19 free as of now.

Altogether, 1, 30,825 samples have been tested till date.
