Imphal: The Tokpa Naga Village Authority (TNVA) and the Liangmai Naga Council (LNC) have demanded immediate action following a late-night armed attack in Tokpa Naga village in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on August 11.
According to the two organisations, the attack took place around 9:30 pm in the village under Champai block, when armed men wearing camouflage uniforms allegedly entered the settlement, opened indiscriminate fire and set fire to residential houses and a local church.
Nine houses and the church were completely gutted in the arson, forcing several families to leave their homes. No injuries were reported in the incident.
The TNVA has called for the immediate registration of an FIR, a time-bound investigation and the prompt arrest of those responsible for the attack.
The LNC, meanwhile, demanded an independent inquiry into the conduct and response of security personnel deployed near the area.
The two organisations also urged the state government to strengthen security arrangements in the area and provide adequate compensation, immediate relief and rehabilitation to families displaced by the attack.
Village authorities alleged that security personnel stationed at Kalapahar High School, including personnel from the CRPF and Kangpokpi Police, failed to respond promptly despite emergency appeals and repeated calls for assistance.
The LNC questioned the failure of security forces to intervene, stating that personnel were stationed only a short distance from the site of the violence.
The TNVA and LNC strongly condemned the attack and expressed concern over the alleged failure of nearby security personnel to prevent the destruction or respond effectively once the violence began.
