NLFT cadres

The National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT), a banned extremist outfit has resumed their activities in some rural areas of the state again.

NLFT cadres have been demanding extortion in some areas of Dhalai district, police sources confirmed.

With elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) fast approaching, the NLFT had geared up their extortion activities in the remote and bordering areas of the state.

A group of NLFT, which is now active in Gandachara sub-division, has served extortion notices to seven businessmen of that area.

These businessmen soon informed the Raishyabari Police Station about it.

Raishyabari is in Gandachara sub-division of Dhalai District and very near to Indo-Bangla international border.

The businessmen have been receiving threatening calls and text messages, demanding extortion money on a daily basis.

The outfit demanded money worth Rs 1 Lakh from each, which is to be delivered to it through the barbed-wire fence of the India-Bangladesh border in Raishyabari area.

The businessmen had reportedly received the first call from the banned outfit’s base in Bangladesh on October 26.

People of that area are worried about their safety in the wake of this threat.

According to sources, the phone number being used by the banned outfit for contacting the businessmen belong to Somen Tripura alias Hero Tripura (26), a resident of Deshrai Para, who had joined the group in July this year.

Soumen Tripura is currently operating along with four other members of the outfit.

The police had arrested a few cadres of NLFT from Khowai and Dhalai districts in July this year.

However, before they could lay their hands on Somen, he fled to Bangladesh along with his wife and child.

They are reportedly in Shambhurai Para in Khagrachhari district in Bangladesh, said sources.

The sub-divisional police officer of Gandacherra has asked the Raishyabari Police Station and jawans of the 164th Battalion of BSF to remain vigilant in the Indo-Bangladesh border.
