Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga on Friday opened nine intermediate storage godowns in different parts of the state.
The inaugural function was attended by state Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister K Lalrinliana along with other important officials.
Speaking on the occasion, Zoramthanga said that his government is making massive efforts to avoid starvation during COVID-19 pandemic.
He said that the government has taken measure to spend all that it has to ensure that supply of food grain is not disrupted and people are not starved amidst several adversities and difficulties triggered by the outbreak of COVID-19.
He urged officials of the state supply department to make massive efforts so that the state has enough stock of rice and other essential commodities.
Supply minister K Lalrinliana said the Centre had sanctioned Rs 19.22 crore for the construction of 10 intermediate storage godowns in different parts of the state.
He said that the godowns were constructed in Kolasib, Darlawn, Khuangleng, Darlung, Reiek, Khawlailung, North Hlimen, Chawngte and Maubawk.
However, the construction of intermediate storage godown in Lawngtlai in the southern part of the state is yet to begin due to certain problem in acquisition of land for the construction, he said.
He said that the government also received money from NABARD for construction of 21 intermediate storage godowns in different parts of the state.
Besides, the government is taking steps to construction 37 godowns in different parts of the state, he said.
