Acting on a tip off, police on Thursday evening had raided a house at Ramnagar in Agartala, and seized huge consignment of ecstasy drugs.
While a joint team of anti-narcotics and crime branch raided the house on Road Number 3 at Ramnagar in Agartala, they noticed some packets were being off-loaded from a vehicle.
The raiding team immediately launched a cordon-and-search operation in the house, and seized huge consignments of drugs.
The operation was launched by Tarun Debbarma, deputy superintendent of police (DSP) of Anti Narcotics Cell of Tripura Police.
Ecstasy drugs consignment of the value of around Rs 10 lakh have been seized, police officials said.
One Agartala-based businessman, Uttam Bhattacharjee alias Shyamal was arrested, and is now being interrogated at an undisclosed location.
The house where the raid was conducted on Thursday evening was being used as banquet hall for weddings and other social functions.
A joint team of Tripura Police, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and Customs (Preventive) have started investigating the case.
From prima facie investigation, it has come to fore that Uttam Bhattacharjee was the kingpin of the international drugs smuggling network in Tripura.
The arrested drug smuggler reportedly told the interrogators that the international network is well spread in three countries — Myanmar, India and Bangladesh.
Tripura Police is likely to produce the drug smuggler before a court in Agartala on Friday afternoon, and is going to plead for custody.
“We need to interrogate the person because there are some missing links, and we are trying to connect the dots,” a senior police official said.
Police have reportedly recovered foreign currencies and two mobile phones from Uttam Bhattacharjee.
Mobile service providers have been asked to provide the call details of the mobile connections as it would help in the investigations.
