A convict, serving a life sentence for murder in the Jorhat Central Jail, died on Tuesday at Jorhat Medical College Hospital (JMCH) where he was undergoing treatment for multiple ailments.

The deceased has been identified as 65-year-old Girja Prasad Sahu.

A jail official said Sahu, a resident of Rai Bahadur Lane at Jorhat, was serving a life sentence after he was convicted in a murder case in May 2004.

He was suffering from several ailments and was admitted to JMCH where he expired, the official added.

The official said Sahu, who served nearly 16 years in jail, was about to be released.

Meanwhile, two persons on a motorbike on Wednesday snatched a bag, reportedly containing Rs 50,000 cash, from a businessman at the busy Marwari Patty area here.

A police source said the businessman, identified as Dhrubajyoti Bora of Kakodunga outskirts here, though resisted the attempt of the motorcycle-borne duo but the miscreants succeeded in their bid and fled from the site.

Police were informed about the incident which was recorded in a CCTV camera installed in the locality.

The investigation is on, said police.

Another failed snatching attempt took place in the Chamber Road at Jorhat on Wednesday.
