Putting a stop to all speculations, the N Biren Singh-led government in Manipur won the motion of confidence by a voice vote on Monday.

The news has been confirmed by Manipur chief minister’s adviser Rajat Sethi.

“Manipur BJP govt has won the trust vote. The ayes have it! Devious plans of Congress to destabilise the Govt have failed. Congrats CM @NBirenSingh ji,” Rajat Sethi tweeted.

The development has brought an end to the political uncertainty which prevailed in Manipur since June 17 after a total of 9 MLAs including the ministers from the National People’s Party (NPP) along with 3 BJP MLAs withdrew support to N Biren-led government.

According to a report, 8 Congress MLAs stayed away from the Assembly proceedings on Monday despite the party issued a whip to vote against the trust motion moved by the chief minister.

The BJP government was supported by 28 members on the floor of the Assembly.

Two Congress MLAs Th Lokeshwar and Mirabai Devi reportedly threw chairs and benches in the Assembly alleging that the confidence motion was not conducted properly.

Chief minister Singh moved the trust motion in wake of a no-confidence motion filed by the Congress.

Manipur Congress spokesman Ningombam Bupenda Meitei in a tweet ahead of the trust vote said: “Voting on Motion of confidence, moved by Leader of the House, has not yet taken place on the floor of the House in Manipur Legislative Assembly today.”

“I am expecting the motion to be put for division vote soon. I hope Speaker will uphold the Constitution,” he tweeted.

The Manipur Congress also raised questions to the BJP-led government over the banning of live streaming of the Assembly proceedings during the Assembly session on Monday.

The State Congress spokesman said the “DD live streaming of today’s trust vote is already banned”.

“How can the people of Manipur be prevented from watching assembly session live on TV in 2020? Why should not the people be allowed to watch the live proceedings in democracy?” Meitei questioned.
