Amid the nationwide lockdown, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has come as a saviour for 1,200 poor families in Dibrugarh town who have been struggling to manage even one square meal a day.
With the lockdown entering the third week, most of the poor families of the town ran out of money and other essential commodities.
The worst sufferers being the daily wage earners, maids, rickshaw and cart pullers and the small-time vendors.
“Our RSS members are taking care of the poor in this critical hour. We have made a list of the poor families who don’t have BPL or APL cards and are struggling to arrange food,” said RSS, Dibrugarh Nagar Pramukh Shanka Sharma on Wednesday.
” Till now we have distributed rice, pulses, salt, potato, mustard oil and other essential items to 1,200 families of the town,” he said.
“Our workers and volunteers are preparing the food item packets at our party office,” he added.
“We are distributing the food items by adhering to the social distancing norms,” he further added.
“Our volunteers are working on the ground daily after taking approval from the district administration. We intend to extend the assistance to 2,000 families,” he further added.
Recently RSS national general secretary Suresh Bhayyaji Joshi had urged the functionaries of the organisation to provide necessary assistance to the people in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic.
Several other organisations of the town, including NGOs, clubs, societies and religious bodies apart from individuals have come to the aid of the people in the wake of the crisis.
