Assam Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi inaugurated the third International Shiva Festival and Maha Shivratri 2020 at the historic Shiva Dol in eastern Assam’s Sivasagar on Thursday.
He prayed for the welfare of all sections of the people of the State after the inauguration.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Mukhi said, “The Ahom kings had contributed immensely to every aspect of the Assamese society including its architectures, sculptures of the place and good governance”.
He recalled the immense contribution of the Ahom Kings and praised the Ahom era architecture.
Considering the unique architecture of the Ahom kingdom he said that research can be conducted which can contribute to the spread of Ahom architecture to other parts of the country.
The Governor exhorted that the district has all the potential to grow as one of the most sought after tourist destinations.
He also called for coordinated efforts towards preservation of the monuments.
He urged upon the public to act as a force multiplier to project Sivasagar as one of the best tourist destinations in the country.
Prof Mukhi also deliberated upon the significance of Maha Sivaratri and appealed to all the devotees to come to this Shiva utsav to witness the grand celebrations on Lord Shiva.

He said that Shiva Dol is one of the best Shiva mandirs in the country that attracts lot of tourists from all over the world.
So it becomes very important for all the people of the district and the State to know each and every historical issues relating to the temple.
He further lauded the personal initiatives of the deputy commissioner, Dr M S Lakshmi Priya towards enabling Sivasagar to gain the coveted status as one of the five Iconic sites declared in present Union Budget.
Expressing his gratitude for having been invited for the inaugural function, the Governor extended his wishes to all the devotees and said that he sincerely believed that the celebrations will strengthen the bond of universal brotherhood and the feeling of harmonious co-existence in the society.
The First Lady of Assam Prem Mukhi, Rajya Sabha MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, president of Maha Shivaratri and third International Shiva Festival organization committee Ganga Prasad Borgohain, proprietor of Pratidin group of publication Jayanta Baruah along with a host of other dignitaries were present in the inaugural function.
