Hundreds of people on Monday took part in Gana Hungkar- an anti-CAA protest rally organised at Bhebarghat playground in Mangaldai.
The rally was called by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) along with the artiste fraternity under the Shilpi Samaj banner and thirty other ethnic organisations.
People from various walks of life including senior citizens and students took part in this rally.
AASU chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya, AJYCP general secretary Palash Changmai, AASU executive member Utpal Sharma, singers Babu Barua and Nekib Rahman, and composer Ajay Phukan were among the prominent speakers who addressed the gathering.
“CAA must be withdrawn at any cost and there will be no compromise over it,” said AASU adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya.
“We will not rest until CAA is withdrawn,” he added.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he respects the democratic movement. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal stated he has respect for the democratic protest,” Bhattacharya said.
“If so, then they should withdraw CAA respecting the relentless democratic protests of the people of Assam,” he asserted.
Lashing out at the BJP government further he said, “The BJP government has miserably failed to convince the people of Assam regarding CAA and so it is organising peace rallies and misguiding the people.”
AJYCP GS Palash Changmai too strongly criticized the BJP government for its anti-Assam, anti-Northeast policies and dividing people in the name of religion.
The protesters displayed anti-CAA placards and raised slogans as well.
The protesters also played the ‘Doba’- a traditional Assamese drum- to vent out their angst against the government and CAA.
