Army in Tripura, Assam
Army and Assam Rifles personnel were deployed in Assam and Tripura where widespread violence occurred during protests against CAA.

As the law and order situation in Guwahati went out of control unprecedented protests against the Citizenship Amendment Bill, two Army columns have been requisitioned in the city.

Informing this, Guwahati-based defence PRO, Lt. Col. P Khongsai told Northeast Now on Wednesday evening, “The Army will take out flag march in Guwahati soon.”

Curfew has already been imposed in Guwahati with effect from 6:15 pm on Wednesday and it will continue till 6:15 am on Thursday.

The CAB was passed in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

While two city buses, two private vehicles and one crane were torched by anti-CAB protestors in Guwahati on Wednesday evening.

They also destroyed the railings along the city road from Ulubari to Khanapa.

The barricades, placed in various places in the city to prevent protestors from moving, were also burnt by the protestors.

To disperse the protestors, the police opened fire in the air, triggered tear gas cells targeting the protestors.

But the people came out in protest in every corner of the city by burning tyres.

Earlier, the Shillong-based defence PRO informed that four Army columns were requisitioned by the civil administrations in Tripura and Assam.

While two Army columns have been deployed in Tripura, the third Army column has been kept standby in Assam, Shillong-based Defence PRO said.

The PRO informed that two columns were deployed in Tripura for internal security on Tuesday.

The requisition for the first column was received at 10:13 am from the deputy commissioner, Radhanagar in Tripura and the same was deployed with immediate effect in Kanchanpur.

The second column of the Army was deployed at Manu in Dhalai district with effect from 10:15 am.

The third column has been requisitioned in Assam’s Bongaigaon district and it has been kept on standby about one km away of the area where the deployment is required as requested by the district administration of the district.

Another column of similar strength has also been kept on standby at Dibrugarh, the defence PRO added.

The approximate strength of one column is about 70 personnel of all ranks.

The field Commanders and Army headquarters are monitoring the situation closely, the defence PRO further said.
