Young students of a school in Assam are on a mission – save the one-horned rhinos of the State.
The students of Nepali Khuti Banuwa LP School near Bokakhat in Golaghat district have given up their mid-day meal to feed young rhino claves.
They donated its monetary worth towards purchasing milk for eight baby rhinos orphaned by this year’s flood at Kaziranga National Park.
When these children were informed about the conditions of the animals in the Kaziranga National Park, they wrote an official letter to their headmaster.

Through the letter they informed the headmaster that they would like to donate the collected money to the Centre for Wildlife Rescue and Conservation (CWRC) which is currently taking care of the rescued animals.
The headmaster forwarded the application to the block elementary education officer Barman Teron, who was moved by the children’s desire to help and gave permission for them to proceed.
On an average one child gets only Rs 3.78 per meal by the government and the sum total rounded up to be just Rs 300.
With that they could only buy one six litre packet of milk while the baby calves required at least 20 litres.
However, moved by this gesture, teachers and staff of the school started donating more money to reach a sufficient target.
Later eight packets of milk powder were donated to CWRC head Rathin Barman in the presence of NRL official P K Baruah and block resource person Pradip Sharma.
From one packet about six litres of milk can be produced and one rhino calf needs 20 litres per day.
