Talking to media persons, the officer-in-charge of Bazarichara police station, BN Molsom said, “We have detained three Nigerians.”

“The Nigerians are now in our custody. They came for a football match in Bangladesh and were unaware about the fact that they entered the Indian territory without valid documents,” the police official said.

Police recovered passport and visa from the Nigerians for travelling in Bangladesh but they could not produce any other documents which could allow them to travel in India.

Due to language barrier they were unable to communicate with the Tripura Police.

“The detained Nigerians will be produced before the court and further investigation will be conducted accordingly,” said the police official.

It is suspected that they came into contact with some misleading gang who is using them for any kind of business.

However, police are investigating the case.

Earlier, on November 2 last, four Nigerian footballers were arrested by railway police at Agartala Railway Station while they were on their way to Guwahati.

They were arrested by Government Railway Police during a search on a Guwahati-bound train.

GRP officials said the footballers were arrested as they did not have any travel papers for their entry in India.

“They have got valid Nigerian passports and valid visa to Bangladesh. However, they don’t have any travel papers for their entry in India,” said an official.

The arrested Nigerians were identified as Okafor Obiorah Michel, 23, Igbanugo Odikpo Donatus, 28, Madubuku Onyedika Chukwu Stanley, 29, and Piterson Wilson, 27.
