Nigerian footballers were on Saturday arrested by railway police at Agartala Railway Station.

Four Nigerian footballers were on Saturday arrested by railway police at Agartala Railway Station while they were on their way to Guwahati.

They were arrested by Government Railway Police during a search on a Guwahati-bound train.

GRP officials said the footballers were arrested as they did not have any travel papers for their entry in India.

“They have got valid Nigerian passports and valid visa to Bangladesh. However, they don’t have any travel papers for their entry in India,” said an official.

The arrested Nigerians have been identified as Okafor Obiorah Michel, 23, Igbanugo Odikpo Donatus, 28, Madubuku Onyedika Chukwu Stanley, 29, and Piterson Wilson, 27.

He said preliminary investigation suggested the Nigerian nationals illegally entered the Indian territory through Bangladesh.

Some currency notes, four Nigerian passports and train tickets from Agartala to Guwahati were found on them.

The GRP have handed over the footballers to Amtali police.
