In a significant development, the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday stated that voters left out of NRC in Assam will have the right to vote until and unless their case is pending at Foreigners Tribunal.
A report quoting ECI stated that D-voters will remain on Assam’s electoral roll unless their case is decided by a Foreigners’ Tribunal.
The NRC authorities published a final list on August 31 last that includes the citizenship status of every individual in Assam.
Notably, 19 lakh people have been left out of the final list.
Those who failed to make it to the final NRC list have been given 120 days to appeal against their exclusion at the Foreigners Tribunals.
If not satisfied with the verdict of the tribunals, they will have the option to move the High Court and the Supreme Court for redressal.
The administration has set up 100 Foreigners Tribunals in Assam and the State Government has decided to set up another 200 Foreigners Tribunals in the coming weeks.
