People migrating from neighbouring countries and taking refuge in India due to religious persecution, shall be granted Indian citizenship, said BJP national secretary Ram Madhav in Silchar on Friday evening.

Madhav said this while speaking at an event held on the occasion of 81st birth anniversary of former Silchar MLA Late Bimolangshu Roy.

“While in the whole of India NRC was completed in 1951, it took close to 70 years for NRC to be completed in Assam, for which omission and commission would definitely be there, which  needs to be rectified,” said the BJP leader.

“19 lakh names are left out of the NRC and many minor as well as major errors have surfaced for which a fresh verification and cross examination needs to be done,” he said.

“Our party is committed to include every genuine citizen of this country in the list,” Madhav added.

Speaking about the concerns of the Hindu Bengalis, who have been excluded from the NRC list, the BJP national general secretary said, “There is nothing to worry about it as it is the responsibility of our government to protect and provide security to the persecuted families that have come from neighbouring countries.”

“We have quashed Article 370 for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, who were unable to breathe in a free India due to this draconian law and now we would pass the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, soon for all of you, who had suffered a lot due to partition,” said Madhav.

A biography of late Bimolangshu Roy written by Dipankar Ghosh was also released by Ram Madhav at the vent.

Assam minister Parimal Suklabaidya, former Union ministe, Kabindra Purkayastha, Assam assembly deputy speaker Aminul Haque Laskar and several other party leaders were also present in the programme.
