Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath said Assam could be “an example” for his state in implementation the NRC.
Adityanath said when Uttar Pradesh would need an NRC; his government is ready to go ahead with it.
“In the first phase, it (the NRC) has been in Assam and the way it is being implemented there (Assam), it can be an example for us,” the chief minister said.
Yogi Adityanath is worried because during the last couple of years, the illegal migration issue has been disturbing the political equations in Uttar Pradesh, especially in the local levels.
According to the state government figures, nearly two lakh illegal migrants live in Lucknow, Allahabad, Varanasi and Kanpur.

Most of the illegal migrants from Bangladesh work as daily-wage labourers in different cities in Uttar Pradesh.
Over 90 per cent of the illegal migrants don’t speak or understand Hindi.
Surprisingly, most of them possess Aadhaar cards, ration cards, voter ID cards, and are largely involved in criminal activities.
In the past, the chief minister had directed the police to identify, verify and deport foreign nationals living in Uttar Pradesh.
Yogi Adityanath said using the Assam experience; Uttar Pradesh can start it in phases.
The firebrand BJP leader said the NRC is important for the national security and it will also put a stop on the rights of poor being taken away by illegal immigration.
