In a crackdown against ganja trade, Dibrugarh police on Monday arrested one person and seized 13.5 kg of Tripura ganja from Mohanaghat area of Dibrugarh.

The arrested person has been identified as Hemanta Das.

The ganjas were seized from Das’ residence.

According to police, on a tip off, a team of police raided the residence of Hemanta Das and was able to seize the ganja.

A case has been registered against Das at the Dibrugarh Police Station under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

According to sources, two youth from Panchali area of Dibrugarh have been running the ganja trade in Dibrugarh under the nose of the Dibrugarh police.

Sources said a huge quantity of ganja come from Tripura and Meghalaya for distribution in Dibrugarh.

“Many college-going students purchase ganja from a particular shop at Panchali. The shop is run by two youth – Raja and Anil,” said sources.

“Meghlaya ganja has a huge demand in Dibrugarh market and mostly the students purchase one puria (small packet) at Rs 50. Due to unavailability of Meghalaya ganja, the demand of Tripura ganja has shot up to Rs 100 per puria,” said a source.

Meanwhile, Dibrugarh police on Sunday arrested a drugs trader while transporting a consignment of 475 grams of brown sugar.

The drug peddler was identified as Mohd Safiqul Ali, a resident of Kalibari area, which is known as the dark underbelly of Dibrugarh town.

Dibrugarh police have started crackdown against drugs and so far many peddlers were arrested from different locations of Dibrugarh town.
