Two persons were killed and few others injured in a major road mishap that occurred at Machpara under Bilasipara sub-division of Asam’s Dhubri district on Saturday.

The road mishap occurred when a mini 407 truck collided head-on with a motorcycle on National Highway 31 on Saturday.

One of the deceased has been identified as Hussain Ali Mondal, who is believed to be the bike rider while the body of the other deceased is yet to be identified.

According to locals, the Bilasipara police opened fire targeting the mini 407 truck as a result of which the truck driver had lost control over his vehicle.

“After losing balance the 407 truck collided with another truck and a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction,” said locals.

In protest against the incident, the locals blocked the National Highway 31 and demanded that action be taken against the alleged police personnel for their irresponsible act of firing.

Yuvraj, superintendent of police, Dhubri along with other police officials and a team of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rushed to the spot and controlled the situation.

They also led a rescue operation in the area.

The Dhubri SP assured the aggrieved locals of conducting a fair inquiry into the case and said stern action would be taken against the persons who are found guilty.

Although the actual cause of firing has not yet been ascertained but police sources said the mini 407 truck bearing registration No AS 01-JC-8486 was a stolen vehicle.

When the police asked the driver to stop the vehicle the driver allegedly ignored the police signal and speeded up the truck.

“Further investigation is underway,” said police.
