Attacks on Congress candidates and leaders by BJP workers continue to be reported from various parts of Assam ahead of the State Assembly elections 2021.

In such an incident, a mandal president of the Congress was seriously injured after being attacked by BJP workers at Khumtai in Golaghat district.

According to reports, Rantu Dutta, a mandal president of Khumtai Legislative Assembly Constituency, was attacked by a group of 15-16 BJP workers on Monday in which he received serious injuries.

Rantu Dutta was attacked when he was returning home after participating in campaigns for former minister and party leader Bismita Gogoi, who has been fielded by Congress for the Khumtai Assembly seat.

The group of BJP workers allegedly chased Dutta and attacked with rods.

Seriously injured Dutta, who was initially rushed to the Golaghat civil hospital, has been admitted to the Jorhat Medical College Hospital (JMCH) for better treatment.

Bismita Gogoi demanded that action should be taken by the Election Commission.

“Election is not above human life. If anyone can’t give life, he also has no right to take other’s life,” an emotional Gogoi said while pointing out at the BJP’s Khumtai MLA Mrinal Saikia.

Gogoi alleged that the Election Commission is yet to take any action against incidents of elected-related violence reported on a daily basis in her constituency.

Earlier on Sunday, three cases of attack on Congress leaders were reported.

After the attack on the Congress candidate of Thowra constituency and a similar attack in Haflong constituency, BJP workers attacked the vehicle of the Congress candidate for Patharkandi Assembly constituency, Sachin Sahoo on Sunday.

In protest against the attack, Congress candidate Sachin Sahoo along with other party workers staged a sit-in demonstration on the street in Patharkandi.

Patharkandi Assembly constituency falls under the Karimganj district in Barak Valley.

According to reports, Congress candidate Sushanta Borgohain was attacked while he was participating in an election rally at Thowra.

The incident took place outside the Rajmai Tea Estate.

Susanta Borgohain had alleged that supporters of BJP candidate from Thowra constituency, Kushal Dowari, were behind the attack.
