NEW YORK: Drawing from Mahatma Gandhi’s assertion that “freedom of the press is a precious privilege that no country can afford to overlook,” United Nations General Assembly president Dennis Francis has urged a renewed dedication to safeguarding journalists and media workers globally.
Issuing a joint statement with presidents Simona Mirela Miculescu of the UNESCO General Conference, Paula Narváez of the UN Economic and Social Council, and Omar Zneiber of the Human Rights Council, Francis underscored the importance of supporting journalists reporting on environmental issues.
“We advocate for the enhancement of policies that uphold free, independent, and diverse media, fostering a dynamic and inclusive public discourse fundamental to the vitality of peaceful, equitable, and sustainable societies,” they emphasized.
Recognizing the crucial role of journalists, including women, in raising awareness about climate change, environmental challenges, and disasters, the statement emphasized their invaluable contribution to public understanding.
Monica Grayely, spokesperson for Dennis Francis, highlighted the significance of this year’s World Press Freedom Day, emphasizing its focus on journalism and freedom of expression amidst the ongoing global environmental crisis.
In a message, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed the urgency of informing the public about the unprecedented environmental emergency facing the world and the vital role journalists play in this endeavor.
However, he noted the increasing dangers faced by environmental journalists, with UNESCO documenting approximately 750 attacks on journalists and news outlets reporting on environmental issues in the past 15 years.
Guterres also acknowledged the broader risks faced by journalists worldwide, particularly those reporting on conflict and democracy, condemning the high number of journalists killed in Israeli military operations in Gaza.
Calling for collective action, Guterres urged governments, the private sector, and civil society to join efforts in safeguarding press freedom and protecting the rights of journalists and media professionals globally.
