India shone brilliantly at the 95th Academy Awards in Los Angeles after The Elephant Whisperers bagged the Oscar for Best Documentary Short Film

This magical film was mainly the creative product of two women named Guneet Monga and Kartiki Gonsalves

While the film was produced under Guneet Monga’s production company Sikhya Entertainment, it was directed by Kartiki Gonsalves

Prior to getting the Oscars nomination, Monga, a well-known Bollywood producer, took to LinkedIn to speak of Gonsalves

“Kartiki is an extremely accomplished Indian Natural History, Social Documentary photojournalist / filmmaker, currently based out of the Nilgiris District and Mumbai in India,” she wrote

Monga also revealed how Gonsalves took five years living alongside Bommon, Billie and the Elephants, uncovering the extraordinary story of two caregivers who despite all odds saved an orphaned baby elephant

“In the documentary, Kartiki shows a rare, beautiful and sacred bond between humans, animals and the environment, that establishes the importance of protecting and carrying the practice of caregiving forward for future generations,” wrote Monga

Gonsalves is also one of the first women selected in India as a Sony Imaging Ambassador for the Sony Alpha series as a natural history and social documentary photographer

She holds a BSc degree in Design & Visual Communications from Dr. G.R. Damodaran College of Science and a PG Diploma in Photography from Light & Life Academy
