Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra paid homage to their father Rajiv Gandhi at Vir Bhumi on his 78th birth anniversary
The youngest Prime Minister of India was born at a time when his grandfather Jawaharlal Nehru, was in Ahmednagar jail and was busy in writing The Discovery of India manuscript
Born on 20th August 1944, Gandhi took oath as the 6th Prime Minister of India on the same day his mother Indira Gandhi was assassinated
He was educated at Dehradun’s Welham Boys’ School and Doon School and even went to a boarding school in Switzerland named Ecole D'Humanité
Although he set on an intention to study engineering, he did not completed the degree and returned to India following which he became a member of the Flying Club, where he was trained as a pilot
He was employed as a pilot by Indian Airlines in 1970
On the occasion of his 78th birth anniversary, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor shared a photograph of Gandhi’s private pilot licencein a tweet
“#RememberingRajivGandhi on what would have been his 78th birthday. He piloted the nation to greater heights but was cruelly snatched from us in mid-flight,” Tharoor tweeted
Rajiv Gandhi married Sonia Gandhi in 1968 and had two children Rahul and Priyanka in 1970 and 1972 respectively
He was assassinated by LTTE terrorists in 1991 and was posthumously awarded India’s highest civilian honour, Bharat Ratna, in 1991.
