The Cyber cell of Mumbai Police arrested an IIT graduate for giving online rape threats to Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli’s daughter after the team lost to Pakistan in T20 World Cup.
The accused has been identified as 23-year-old Ramnagesh Srinivas Akubathini from Hyderabad.
Mumbai Police said the accused is being brought to Mumbai.
The accused, who is reportedly an unemployed currently, posted a rape threat to the 9-month-old daughter of Virat Kohli when the Team India captain had thrown his weight behind Mohammed Shami against the social media trolling on communal lines after India lost to Pakistan in the T20 World Cup.
In the match in the UAE, India lost against Pakistan by 10 wickets.
The screenshots of the rape threats, that were shared on social media platforms including Twitter, went viral.
BoomLive had reported that one such threat was made by a Twitter user who went by the name @ramanheist earlier.
According to a media report, the Twitter user recently changed the handle name to @criccrazyygirl to pose as a Pakistani cricket fan.
BoomLive while analysing past tweets by the Twitter handle reported that the account was run by a Telugu-speaking Indian right-wing user and not a Pakistani cricket fan.
The Delhi Commission of Women (DCW) issued a notice to the Delhi police in connection with rape threats issued against the minor girl.
The chairperson of Delhi Commission of Women, Swati Maliwal in a notice, addressed to the Deputy Commissioner of Police and Cyber Crime Branch of Delhi Police, said the Commission had taken a suo motu cognisance of the matter based on media reports.
Maliwal in her notice wrote: “It has been reported that online threats are given to rape the 9-month-old girl child of Virat Kohli since the team’s defeat in the recent India-Pakistan match.”
“It is learnt that he is being also attacked since he spoke against the incessant trolling of his teammate Mohammad Shami who was targeted for his religion by online trolls,” Maliwal wrote.
