Imphal: The Governor of Manipur has constituted District-Level Peace Committees in all districts of the state, each to be chaired by the respective District Magistrate.
As per an official notification issued on Tuesday, the move is aimed at improving the prevailing law and order situation by strengthening peacebuilding through sustained dialogue, community engagement and confidence-building measures.
The decision follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s inquiry about a unified body for communal harmony, after which Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh had announced on October 24 plans to form an all-inclusive body representing all 36 communities of the state.
The committees will have wide representation comprising Superintendents of Police, Sub-Divisional Officers, Sub-Deputy Collectors and other concerned district officials, along with local community leaders, civil society organisations, NGOs, media persons, retired government officials, healthcare professionals, academicians and other members as deemed appropriate by the Chairman.
The committees have been assigned 13 Terms of Reference and 4 core functions. They are mandated to meet at least once every fortnight, and more frequently if required based on the local security situation.
