Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Sunday inaugurated the BRICS Sustainable Lifestyle Week 2026 at Khuman Lampak, marking the launch of a week-long environmental campaign aimed at promoting sustainable practices among citizens.

The initiative is being organised by the Government of Manipur in alignment with India’s BRICS Chairship and the Centre’s Mission LiFE framework. It is also intended to build momentum ahead of the COP31 climate summit by encouraging community-level participation in environmental conservation.

The opening day featured a mass tree plantation drive led by the Chief Minister, followed by the flagging off of a statewide cyclothon. The campaign seeks to encourage youth-led activities and translate broader environmental commitments into practical initiatives across districts.

Participation in the nationwide campaign is being coordinated through the MY Bharat Portal, bringing together volunteers, educational institutions, government ministries and state departments. Officials said participation figures and outcomes from activities would be documented to assess the overall impact of the initiative.

Guidelines issued by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the University Grants Commission have outlined seven daily themes for the campaign, covering different aspects of sustainable living.

The schedule includes:

  • November 1: Promoting healthy lifestyles through yoga, community walkathons and tree plantation drives.
  • November 2: Encouraging energy conservation by switching off non-essential electrical appliances.
  • November 3: Promoting water conservation through rainwater harvesting and restoration of local water bodies.
  • November 4: Supporting sustainable food systems, with an emphasis on millets and indigenous diets.
  • November 5: Campaigning against single-use plastics through community plogging activities.
  • November 6: Reducing electronic waste through dedicated collection and recycling camps.
  • November 7: Promoting waste reduction through public cleanliness drives.

In a message shared through his official channels, the Chief Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to encouraging environmentally responsible habits. He urged citizens to participate in the campaign and adopt simple, sustainable practices to help build a cleaner, greener and healthier Manipur.
