In August this year, Russia announced that it had registered the world’s first Covid19 vaccine and named it after the first Soviet space satellite Sputnik-I, which was launched in 1957.

Sputnik V is the world’s first registered vaccine based on a well-studied human adenoviral vector-based platform.

It currently ranks among the top ten candidate vaccines approaching the end of clinical trials and the start of mass production on the World Health Organization’s (WHO) list.

Sputnik V vaccine has been developed by Russia’s Gamaleya National Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology.

The vaccine candidate arrived in India following the nod to Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical company, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, to conduct an adaptive phase 2/3 human clinical trial for the vaccine in the country.

A video of small containers having the logo of Dr. Reddy’s and Sputnik V, being unloaded from a vehicle, has gone viral on social media.

So far, the journal Lancet stated, the Sputnik V vaccine remains effective despite the low number of people on whom it was tried in Russia.

According to interim trial results announced by Russia’s health ministry, Sputnik V vaccine has shown 92% efficacy in preventing Covid19 disease.
