Facebook, the company, has changed its name to Meta.

This big announcement was made by Facebook CEO – Mark Zuckerberg on Thursday.

Zuckerberg said that Facebook, the company, is changing its name to Meta to reflect its growing focus on the metaverse.

“From now on, we’re going to be the metaverse first, not Facebook first,” Zuckerberg said.

He added: “Our brand is so tightly linked to one product that it can’t possibly represent everything we’re doing today, let alone the future.”

However, Meta will just be the name of the parent company, and the apps Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp will still be called by its original names.

“I am proud to announce that starting today, our company is now Meta. Our mission remains the same, still about bringing people together, our apps and their brands, they’re not changing,” Zuckerberg added.

Name change of the Facebook company comes amid the tech giant’s efforts to move past from being a scandal-plagued social network to its virtual reality vision for the future.

The social media giant has been battling one of its most serious crises ever since former employee Frances Haugen leaked reams of internal studies showing executives knew of their sites’ potential for harm, prompting a renewed US push for regulation.
