The COVID19 death toll crossed one lakh mark in India while the number of positive cases surged past 64-lakh on Saturday.

According to the Union health ministry’s latest data, with a spike of 79,476 COVID19 cases and 1,069 deaths in the last 24 hours, India’s positive tally increased to 64,73,544 cases, with 1,00,842 deaths.

India recorded 67,376 deaths due to COVID19 infection, a month ago.

The country recorded the first fatality when a 76-year-old man died of the virus on March 13.

Out of the total positive cases, 9,44,996 are currently active, 54,27,706 have been discharged after their recovery.

The recovery rate in India stands at a high of 83.84% while the death rate has come down to 1.56%, the data from the Union health ministry said.

Maharashtra continues to be the worst-hit state with a total of 14,16,513 positive cases, including 37,480 deaths.

Maharashtra is followed by Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi.

India conducted 11,32,675 COVID19 tests in a single day on Friday, taking the total number of samples tested so far to 7,78,50,403, according to the data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

Globally, only the United States and Brazil have recorded more COVID19-related deaths.

More than 2.12 lakh people in the United States and about 1.45 lakh in Brazil have died due to COVID19 infection so far.
