COVID-19 crisis: Mamata Banerjee urges EC to hold last three phases of West Bengal elections on single day

West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief – Mamata Banerjee has urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to hold the last three phases of West Bengal Assembly polls on a single day or two days at maximum.

Urging the ECI to re-consider its decision to go ahead according to the original poll schedule for West Bengal elections, Mamata Banerjee said that holding the last three phases of polls on a single day or in two days would help in checking the spread of COVID-19.

“I request the Election Commission, with folded hands, to hold the last three phases of elections in West Bengal on a single day. If not one day, conduct it in two days. Please don’t take decision based on BJP’s opinion. Ensure protection of public health. Curtailing election schedule,” West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said while addressing an election rally.

Mamata Banerjee further said that the TMC leaders from now onward would not hold any election rally in congested areas.

Notably, India registered 2,73,810 new COVID-19 positive cases in the last 24 hours.

Moreover, India registered 1,619 more COVID-19 related deaths in the last 24 hours.

“Ten states including Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Karnataka, Kerala, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Rajasthan reported 78.58% of the new cases,” Union Health Ministry said in a statement.
