About 100 miners were feared killed in a landslide at Longkhin village tracts in Phakant Township of Kachin State in Myanmar on July 14.

According to Mizzima News about 100 Yaymasay jade miners (rag picker miners from waste earth dumpsites) were feared dead in the landslide. About 200 people were searching and picking up jade when the landslide took place at about 2 pm on July 14, the news report said quoting local people there.

So far 14 bodies were recovered. Altogether 47 people were admitted at Lonekhin sub-township hospital in Phakant Township. However, two critically injured died on way to Myitkyina hospital.

It has become very difficult to retrieve the bodies as the mud is 6 feet deep. Landslide took place in about 40 mine pits and some workers were working with backhoe earth movers there. About five mining companies are working near this dump site.
