Guwahati: Spain were crowned FIFA World Cup 2026 champions after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 in extra time in the final at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, securing their second World Cup title.
The decisive goal came in the 106th minute when substitute Ferran Torres finished a well-worked move after Pedro Porro’s cross was headed back across goal by Nico Williams. Torres arrived unmarked in the centre of the penalty area and fired past goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez to break the deadlock.
Spain dominated possession throughout the contest, controlling the tempo and repeatedly forcing Argentina deep into their own half. Despite creating several opportunities, the European side struggled to convert their chances during regulation time, while an earlier extra-time goal was disallowed following a foul on Nicolás Otamendi.
