Guwahati: Spain defeated France 2-0 in the FIFA World Cup semi-final to reach their first final since 2010 and set up a title clash with the winner of the England-Argentina encounter.
Goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro secured Spain’s place in the Sunday night’s final as the reigning European champions outplayed France, who had entered the match as the tournament’s highest-scoring side.
Spain dominated possession and controlled the tempo throughout, restricting France to just two shots on target. It was also the first time France had fallen behind at the tournament.
Spain took the lead in the 22nd minute after Marc Cucurella’s cross into the box led to a penalty. Lucas Digne brought the ball down but caught Lamine Yamal with his follow-through while attempting to clear, prompting the referee to point to the spot. Oyarzabal converted confidently, beating goalkeeper Mike Maignan despite the French keeper diving the right way.
France survived another scare 15 minutes later when Dayot Upamecano produced a crucial last-ditch challenge to deny Fabian Ruiz with the goal at his mercy.
Spain doubled their advantage just before the hour mark as Pedro Porro finished from close range following a neat exchange of passes with Dani Olmo.
France’s attack struggled to make an impact throughout the contest. Michael Olise was well contained by Cucurella, Ousmane Dembele had little influence, and captain Kylian Mbappe failed to create any clear-cut chances. Coach Didier Deschamps made tactical adjustments after Spain’s opening goal, but France could not find a way back into the match.
Spain, who lifted their only World Cup title in 2010, are now one victory away from a second crown. They will face either England or Argentina in the final.
