Guwahati: The Supreme Court has sought a response from the Assam government on a bail petition filed by Shyamkanu Mahanta, one of the accused in the case linked to the death of Assam’s renowned singer Zubeen Garg.
A Bench comprising Justices B.V. Nagarathna and Joymalya Bagchi issued notice to the state government and directed it to submit its reply within three weeks. The matter is scheduled to come up for hearing again at the end of July.
Mahanta, an event manager and chief organiser of the North East India Festival in Singapore, approached the apex court after the Gauhati High Court rejected his bail application on May 29.
The petition before the Supreme Court challenges the High Court’s order denying him relief in the case. During the hearing, the Bench took note of the submissions made on behalf of the petitioner and decided to seek the Assam government’s response before considering the matter further.
With the issuance of notice, the case has entered a new phase of legal scrutiny at the country’s highest court. The Supreme Court is expected to examine the arguments presented by both the petitioner and the state government during the next hearing.
The outcome of the proceedings could have a significant bearing on Mahanta’s plea for bail as the investigation and related legal processes continue.
