The Indian pugilist from Manipur, MC Mary Kom, has become world boxing champion for the sixth time and made history in the event.

MC Mary Kom won the sixth gold by defeating Ukraine’s H. Okhota in an unanimous 5:0 decision in light fly 48 kg category at the 2018 AIBA World Championship being held at New Delhi.

Informing about the the AIBA on its official Twitter account on Saturday stated:  “MC Mary Kom (India) defeats Mi Hyang Kim (PRK) and becomes 2018 AIBA World Champion!! Congratulations Mary.”

Mary Kom surpassed legendary Irish boxer Katie Tayor after winning the 6th gold at the World Championships.

It may be mentioned that Katie Taylor has five golds to her name at the World Championships.

This win has helped her level with men’s six-time world champion Felix Savon in World Championships
history.

Mary Kom earlier decided to miss the Asian Games 2018 to prepare for the World Championships.

Boxer Mary Kom has also thanked her fans and coaches for their support after winning the historic gold.

She also stated: “I am emotional today because for the past few I couldn’t fight properly. I had to jump a category, which was also very challenging.”

Congratulating her for her achievement Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju on his Twitter handle on Saturday stated:  “Dear Mary Kom, you have done it again for India. Congratulations on winning record 6th World Boxing title! India salutes.”
