Shakuntala D Gamlin, Secretary, Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment called on Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday at his office to discuss implementation of ambitious programme Divyangjan in the State.

Gamlin has briefed the Chief Minister that the Ministry was keen to implement the programme in the State of Meghalaya and have sought for list of beneficiaries, so that a fillip in the Social Welfare activities can be stepped up.

The Ministry in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare, Government of Meghalaya will hold a special camp in the State to provide aid and appliance for persons with disabilities.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has assured full cooperation to the Ministry official for implementation of the programme. The Ministry is also keen to set up Composite Regional Centre in Meghalaya, which has affiliation with the prestigious Boston University and has sought for 20 acres land from the State Government to set up the institute that would cater to the needs of the persons with disabilities.

The Ministry would also executive a special skill training for persons with disability with registered NGOs, who have enrolled with the Ministry. She also informed the Chief Minister that Rs 2.5 cr for setting up of Spinal Injury Centre in the State has been sanctioned, the office of the Chief Minister Communication Cell, stated.

The other matter discussed included providing ramp in different public offices as well as audio signal provision with signage.

Home Minister James K Sangma was also present in the meeting, the communication cell stated.
