The University Grants Commission (UGC) conferred St Joseph’s College Jakhama in Kohima district of Nagaland autonomous status after the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) re-accredited the college with Grade A.
The NAAC is an organisation that assesses and accredits higher education institutions.
An official release on Wednesday said based on the report of the UGC expert committee, its standing committee at a meeting held on September 20 decided to grant autonomous status to St. Joseph’s College Jakhama, affiliated to Nagaland University, for a period of 10 years from 2018- 2019 to 2027- 2028 under the UGC scheme for autonomous colleges.
UGC joint secretary Dr Surender Singh in a notification on October 11 directed the registrar of Nagaland University to issue necessary notification or order regarding the grant of autonomous status to the college as per UGC (Conferment of Autonomous Status Upon Colleges and Measures for Maintenance of Standards in Autonomous Colleges) Regulations, 2018 for Autonomous Colleges. The college, if eligible, will apply for autonomy grant as per the norms laid down in the regulations, the notification said.
It further said the autonomous college is required to abide by all the provisions of the UGC Regulations for Autonomous Colleges, available on the UGC website www.ugc.ac.in.
The notification further said the college will have to apply in the prescribed format to UGC for extension of autonomous status six months prior to the expiry of the autonomous cycle.
